Biology Unit 2 AOS1 SAC- continuing on Flashcards
(21 cards)
binary fission
- function: reproduction
- occurs in unicellular organisms
- product: two cells with identical genomes (full sets of DNA)
budding
- a fully formed individual breaks off the adult.
-the budded individual may need to grow before it can also produce a bud.
fragmentation
- can occur deliberately or as a result of damage.
- some organisms reproduce by breaking into pieces.
- more common in plants.
- starfish
vegetative reproduction
-plants
- piece of plant breaks off and is grown into a fully formed individual
- results in a clone of the parent plant
spores
- cells which can grow into a new plant
- produced by meiosis
- offspring only has one member of each homologous pair and thus the offspring may not be identical to the parent.
parthenogenesis
- development of a new individual from an unfertilized egg.
- may not be genetically identical like spores
cloning- negative
- lack of genetic diversity
- lack of biodiversity overall because many previously grown varieties are no longer grown anywhere.
population
all members of one species living in a particular ecosystem at a particular time.
community
all of the species of living things living in a particular ecosystem at a particular time.
ecosystem
the living organisms, non-living environment and all of the interactions between them
habitat
the environment in which a particular organism lives.
what do food webs and food chains show
the movement of energy through ecosystems
genetic diversity
- beneficial because it increases the chances of species survival in changing conditions.
- all of the different genes and alleles present in a species or population
what is each level of the food chain called
trophic level
base of the food chain
producer or autotroph
consumers/heterotrophs
organisms that get their energy by consuming/eating other organisms
scavengers:
animals which eat the dead remains of other animals
omnivores
animals which eat both plants and other animals
herbivores
animals which only eat plants
carnivores
animals which only eat other animals
order of the food chain
sunlight - producer - primary consumer( (herbivore) - secondary consumer - tertiary consumer - top carnivore
