7
Q

what happens when the blood is processed at the renal arteries

A

the blood leaves the kidney via the renal veins and is transported in the inferior vena cave back to the heart

10
Q

what does osmoregulation do

A

the homeostatic control of body water by adjusting the solute conc of cells and body fluids. This ensures that cells do not burst which would affcet cell reactions

16
Q

what is the bladder

A

is a muscular sac which stores urine

17
Q

what is nephron

A

microscopic filtration unit

18
Q

what two regions does the kidney have

A

outer cortex and inner medulla

19
Q

what happens at the nephron

A

the blood is filtered, urea is removed and salt and water levels are regulated

20
Q

what is the glomerulus

A

group of convoluted blood capillaries

21
Q

what is the cup shaped structure called

A

bowmans capsule

22
Q

what is ultrafiltration

A

filtration using high pressure

23
Q

what is ultrafiltration used for

A

to force tissue fluid out of capillaries

24
Q

how is the urea removed from the blood?

A

by hydrostatic pressure which causes ultrafiltration at the bowmans capsule through the basement membrane enabled by small size of urea molecule

25
Q

how does ultrafiltration produce glomerular filtrate

A

By higher than normal blood pressure which removes urea and mineral ions etc.
passes through the basement membrane as it acts like a filter
larger proteins stay behind
fenestrations in capillary endothelium and the presence of podocytes

26
Q

what is osmoregulation

A

the control of water and solute levels within the blood
