Q

How wind tunnels work?

A

Object/performer tested is placed in the tunnel.
A controlled flow of air is forced through.
Airflow around the object studied to measure resistance around it.

Q

Benefits of wind tunnels

A
  • Equipment & technique can be abated to increase the aerodynamic properties (reduce the effect of air resistance & increase performance)
  • Wind speed & direction are controllable to mimic competitive conditions
  • Individual pieces of equipment can be tested

Q

Disadvantages of wind tunnels

A
  • Equipment is expensive & usually located in engineering facilities/research labs
  • Real life conditions may impact unexpectedly so results not always realistic
