Biomedical approach to health Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
what is the biomedical approach to health
A
referred to as the band aid approach, focuses on physical and biological aspects of disease and illness, involves diagnosing disease or illness and then treating the condition. focuses on the use of technology
2
Q
What does it concentrate on?
A
concentrates disease, illness or disability and work to return a person to a pre illness state of H+W,
3
Q
Strengths of biomedical approach - explanation
A
- improvements in technology and research (would be no x rays, antibiotics or aesthetics, little knowledge about how to diagnose and treat illness.)
- illness and conditions can be treated (they stop diseases or conditions that could develop into worse)
- it extends life expectancy (causes of death can be treated and cured)
- improves quality of life (conditions can be managed with medication, therapy or surgery, reducing pain/suffering.)
4
Q
Weaknesses of biomedical approach - explanation
A
- costly relies on health workers and technology (the cost of doctors and equipment are required to adequately treat the patient)
- it doesn’t always promote good health and wellbeing (can encourage reliance on quick fix solutions, the focus is the condition not what caused it.)
- not every condition can be treated (biomedical approach to restore optimal health and wellbeing may not be able to.)
- not always affordable (not everyone can afford the medical technologies and resources.)
