Biostatistics Flashcards
(13 cards)
Define biostatistics
A branch of applied statistical methods in health sciences…public health and biological disciplines
2 branches of biostas
Descriptive: Concerned with the collection…analysis of data from the sample without making conclusions about the population from which the sample was drawn
Inferential: Involves collection…analysis and interpretation of data from the sample and further make conclusions about the population from which the sample was drawn
What is data?
These are quantities or qualities measured or observed that are to be collected and analyzed
Types of data
Raw or Primary: It’s in it’s original form in which it was collected…the information is at first hand in order to satisfy a particular statistical enquiry
It can be collected;
At a single point in time(cross sectional data) : Data is collected from individuals within a specified period of time. E.g through surveys
At regular intervals(time series) : This is data collected quite often over a long period of time such as weekly..monthly ..yearly
Longitudinally(longitudinal) : Repeated data taken on the same individuals at regular intervals aimed at finding out if there has been a change in behavior
Define secondary data
Data that is collected originally to satisfy a particular investigation but has been used now at second hand
Sources of data
Records
External sources
Surveys
Experiments
Define a Variable
This is any characteristic that when measured it takes up a different value
Types of variables
Numeric/Quantitative variable : Numeric
Under this we have discret and continuous
Discret- Whole numbers
Continuous - Values in an interval of the real line….decimal points
Categorical/Qualitative variable : Text form
2 attributes of the categorical variable
Dichotomous
Binary variable
Define statistics
A field of learning concerned with the collection..organisation.. analysis and interpretation of both numerical and categorical data as well as drawing inferences
Dichotomous or Binary
A categorical variable that only has 2 attributes
Scale of measurement
The relationship between the values that are assigned with the attributes of a variable
