Biotechnology Flashcards
(12 cards)
Biotechnology
The manipulation of organisms or their genetic components to make useful products.
Genetic Engineering
The direct manipulation of genes for practical purposes.
Basic Components
Combine DNA sequences from 2 different sources, often inserting a desired gene from one individual or species into another.
The purpose is to get a desired trait introduced into an individual.
Genetic engineering
Involves manipulating genes for practical purposes.
Recombinant DNA
It is formed by joining nucleotide sequences from two different sources.
Vector
A DNA molecule is used as a carrier to deliver a specific DNA segment into a host cell, used for replication or expression.
Plasmids
Small circular DNA molecules are independent of the bacterial chromosomes and are often used as vectors. Often possess Antibiotic-resistant genes.
What two enzymes are required to introduce foreign DNA into the vector DNA
Restriction enzyme and DNA ligase enzyme
Restriction Enzyme
Cuts DNA at a specific nucleotide nitrogen base sequence
DNA Ligase enzyme
Seals the DNA into an opening created by the restriction enzyme.
What did Cohen and Boyer do?
They spliced a gene from a toad into a bacterial plasmid. Human insulin.
How do you locate a gene?
Nucleic acid pr
