DSM -5 criteria for a manic episode
- Distinct period of a bono rally & persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood and abnormally & persistently increased goal-directed activity/energy lasting at least 1 week
- During this period, 3 or more of the symptoms
- Impair social/occupational functioning OR necessitate hospitalization to prevent harm to self or other OR psychotic features
- Not due to substances or medicines
Criteria for Bipolar I disorder
Major depressive episodes - not necessary but it’s common
Episodes meeting full criteria for mania - necessary
Hypomanic episodes - not necessary
Criteria for Bipolar II
Major depressive episodes - necessary
Episodes meeting full criteria for mania - CANNOT be present
Hypomanic episodes - necessary
What is hypomania?
“Under mania”
Persistent disinhibition and mood elevation. Involves irritability but less severe than full mania. There is not functional impairment.
Only for 4 days
Cyclothymic disorder
Less severe but more chronic form of bipolar disorder.
Alternates between hypomanic symptoms and periods of depressive symptoms for at least 2 years. Both don’t meet the criteria
Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder
—> for youth age 6 and older
Must have severe outbursts and between them
