Lithium Toxicity
What happens in manic states?
-Manic episodes last 1 week
-Euphoric or agitated
Hypomania
-Less impairment than mania
-Episodes last at least 4 days
Rapid Cycling
Four or more episodes of hypomania or acute mania within 1 year
Bipolar I
-Most severe
-Highest mortality rate
-at least 1 manic episode
Bipolar II
- At least 1 hypomanic episode
- At least 1 major depressive episode
Cyclothymic Disorder
- At least 2 years of repeated hypomanic manifestations that do not meet the criteria for hypomanic episodes alternating with minor depressive episodes
Lithium Carbonate Therapeutic Levels
0.8-1.4
Lithium Toxic Blood levels
1.5 and above
Lithium Levels should be measured at least how many days after therapy?
5days
What are other times that lithium levels should be checked?
-Monthly checks
-Every time dosage is changed
-After 6 months of staying at that levels they can be checked every 3 months
When should blood should be drawn to check lithium?
In the morning, 10-12 hours after last medication was taken.
What to monitor for when someone is taking lithium?
-Monitor renal function
-monitor thyroid
What symptoms to look for with lithium toxicity?
Diarrhea, tremors, headaches
