Traditional mews
Usually portioned to keep tethered birds separated, has perches for each bird

Free loft mews
Allow captive birds more freedom of movement they take up lots more space

A
  • can the bird fly
  • bird needs to be able to reach and climb from perch to perch
  • ensure water and food bowls aren’t directly underneath to get any waste in them
  • different textures, shapes and sizes of perches

What different type of substrates can you have

A

Corn cobs - can cause death if ingested

Walnut shells - can inflame and irritate organs, can cause death

Cedar shavings - can be toxic to birds

Pine shavings - usually used as nesting materials however if ingested can cause infections

Paper products - safest materials to use

Pea gravel - excellent mews flooring for raptors, lasts a long time, easy to clean

Sand - easily cleaned and easy to manage, naturally looking and cheap
