birmingham Flashcards
(19 cards)
WHAT WAS THE AIM!!!
To investigate differences between redeveloped and non redeveloped areas in birmingham
What’s urban greening
Creation of parks and planting across urban areas
WHY WAS IT A GOOD PLACE TO GO TO
recent redevelopment
location around 50miles from school
What did birminghams council do to help develop undeveloped areas
BIG CITYYY PLANNNNN ( GRAND CENTRAL AND CITY LIBRARY
WHAT IS THE HYPOTHESIS
clue:
environment
pedestrians
vehicles
REDEVELOPED AREAS HAVE BETTER ENVIRONMENT QUALITY
HIGHER PEDESTRIANS AMOUNTS IN DEVELOped AREAS
personal MOTORISED VEHICLE USE IS LOWER IN REDEVLOPED AREAS COMOARED TO NON REDEVELOPED AREAS
aHow did we test the hypothesis
MEASURES
THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY
NO. OF PEDESTRIANS
NO. OF VEHICLES IN EACH AREA
TYPES OF SAMPLIBG
SYSTEMATIC, STRATIFIED, RANDOM
what’s systematic sampling
Identifying sites roughly the same distance from each other. It reduces risk of bias but possible to miss important sites
WHATS STRATIFIED SAMPLING
SELECTING SPECIFIC LOCATIONS TO COLLECT DATA. does lead to bias. Also means that specific and likely important data can be collected
RANDOM
sites are random
unrepresentative of whole area
PLACES WE SELECTED TO GO TO ( STRATIFIED SAMPLING)
brindley place
centenary square
new street
Hinckley street
WHAT TYPES OF ANALYSIS DID YOU CARRY OUT
BI PO,AR SURVEYS - environmental quality survey
PEDESTRIAN COUNTS
TRAFFIC SURVEYS
environmental quality survey what did we assess
The environmental characteristics such as : air quality, pollution, aesthetic appearance, noise
we could have used a decibel reader for noise but it was not available and slowed the process down
WHAT DID THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY SURVEY ENABKE US TO DO
consider environmental quality in both redevelopment and non redeveloped areas, enabling a comparison of results to occur
PEDESTRIAN COUNT WHAT WE DID
stood at each site for 5 mins and counted people walking by in each direction. We COULD have used secondary data but we don’t know how reliable it would be. we stood there for 5 mins to reduce risk of anomalies for example if a large group of tourists came past at one time
we can infer no. of pedestrians corresponds to popularity = development
traffic survey what did u do?
each site tallied no. of vehicles in fixed position, to prevent doubting same vehicle twice. 5 mins each site . Could have asked people how they got to birmingham instead however wouldn’t be effective of looking at difference between redeveloped areas.
Worst / best places aesthetically ( pollution, appearance, greenery, waste
worst : hinckley street
best : brindley place
