investigat changes down stream in the river at cmv
bradshaw model what’s it show
downstream : discharge, channel depth, velocity, channel width, load quantity IS LARGE
upstream: all of the above is not occurring ( only minimally) however it has larger load size, and gradient is larger
why did we choose this river
shows great changes downstream
readily accessed but footpath
safe , not too deep
There’s a distinct river basin, tributaries, river widens as it goes along
HYPOTHESIS
width increase downstream
depth increases downstream
discharge increases downstream
OBJECTIVES
measure width of river
measure depth of river
measure velocity of river
risks + management
trips and falls - sturdy footwear
traffic -keep aware of all traffic
how many sites recorded
10
how width was measured
found place where there was few obstacles such as boulders. Tape measure. Two people held each end of tape measure
depth how’s it measured
held tape across river and measure 5 equal intervals across to determine 5 depth locations, systematic sampling
tried not to push ruler into river bed to be more accurate
velocity how’s it calculated
Dog biscuit, tape measure, stopwatch. Dog biscuit floats + is biodegradable
one person put the dog biscuit in water while other one timed until the the dog biscuit reached person B at 10m point downstream
Repeated 3x to calculate avearage velocity.
how’s the width change downstream
increase as u go downstream ( widest site 10)
velocity
decreases downstream
depth
decreases downstream
problems with dog biscuit
vegetation caused it to get stuck, meaning some results weren’t as accurate
problems with tape measure
strength of current meant it was hard to keep tape measure taut
