What is neurogenic bladder?
Loss of voluntary control of bladder
What is reflux?
When UVJ valve isn’t working properly + causes a backup in the ureters and kidneys
What is diverticula?
Extra urine pouch, echogenic wall that connects it to the main bladder
What is trabeculation?
Thick + irregular bladder wall
What is cystitis?
Inflamed bladder due to infection
Are ureters normally seen?
No, only if dilated
When does residual volume increase?
-Age
-Obstruction
-Chronic cystitis
-Cancer
When does capacity decrease?
-Pelvic masses
-Radiation
-Surgery
-Pelvic + urinary inflammatory diseases
What does a catheter look like in bladder?
Echogenic circle
How does the bladder look in SAG + TRV?
SAG - triagnular
TRV - square (inferior) + round (superior)
Measurement of bladder wall?
-Less than 3mm when filled/distended
-Up to 5mm when empty
M/c approach to assess bladder?
Transabdominally
What is micturition?
Urinating
What is incontinence?
Involuntary urination due to aging or trauma
What is retention?
Inability to empty bladder + urinate
What is enuresis?
Involuntary urination
What is nocturia enuresis?
Bedwetting
What is nocturia?
Needing to go to the bathroom frequently during the night
What area do the ureters insert into the bladder?
Into the trigone area (posterioinferior portion)
Length of ureters?
30cm
What allows urine to enter the bladder + prevents it from being regurgitated?
The UVJ
Where is the bladder located in females?
Bladder is anterior to uterus
Where is the bladder located in males?
Bladder is anterior to prostate
What is the trigone area?
-Triangular region on floor of bladder that contains no rugae
-3 orifices: 2 ureteric, 1 uretheral
