Block IV Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the 3 modes of Operation of the APU
Ground Maintenance Mode (GMM)
Environmental Control Systems (ECS)
Main Engine Start (MES)
Where is the In-Flight refueling probe located
Right forward fuselage
Explain the A/C Fuel Storage System
4 External fuselage tanks, 2 Internal wing tanks, and upto 5 External fuel tanks
What is the purpose of the foam lined wing tanks
Self-sealing of holes or damage and decreased risk of fire or explosions
What is the APU
A centrifugal flow gas turbine engine that supplies air for ECS operation and MES & GMM through the AMADs
What is AMADs
Airframe Mounted Accessory Drive.
Two identical interchangeable gear boxes that transmit power to the engine for starts (located inside doors 53L and 53R)
What is the purpose of Secondary Power Compressed Air
Provide pneumatic power for operating the air turbine starter
What engines do the A/C use
F414-GE-400 Low bypass axial flow turbo fan engine of modular construction with afterburner
What is Ignition-An
An automatic intermittent duty AC powered capacitor discharge system
What lubrication system is used
A dry sump type that requires no external connections or inputs
What is the purpose of Main Fuel
To govern the correct main fuel flow to the combustion section
What is the VEN
Variable Exhaust Nozzle. The VEN is controlled to provide required thrust and fuel efficiencies while maintaining exhaust gas temperature (T5)
What is Variable Geometry
Consists of Fan Variable Geometry (FVG) and Compressor Variable Geometry (CVG).They provide the best efficiency of Fan?Compressor while preserving Stall Margin
What does Anti-Icing provide
Air flow to the engine front frame to prevent the build up of ice
What is the FADEC
Full Authority Digital Engine Control
Determines the ppropiate engine scheduling to operate the engine in all areas of the flight envelope
What is the Throttle
A fly by wire system that allows the pilot to control the A/C engines.
Throttle commands are sent to and received from the FADEC
What is used to drive a fuel boost/motive flow pump, electrical generator, and a 3000/5000 psi hydraulic pump
AMADs
Airframe Mounted Accessory Drive
What safety precautions must be taken while refueling
Must not be done within 100feet of operating airbourne type radio or 300feet of ground radar equipment.
