Blood Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is blood?
Blood is a tissue , which means it is a group of similar cells that act work together to perform a similar function.
Blood is made up of a fluid called plasma , what are the three parts of the plasma?
All three are suspended (not totally dissolved in a fluid )
-White blood cells
-Red blood cells
-Platelets
Do platelets have a nucleus or not?
Platelets do not have a nucleus.
Platelets are responsible for triggering ____________ at the sites of wounds (this is the function of platelets).
Blood clotting
What are White blood cells responsible for?
For defending against infection.
What are Red blood cells responsible for/ transport?
For transporting oxygen from the lungs to all body cells.
What are Platelets responsible for?
For triggering blood clotting at the sites of wounds.
What are the red blood cell features?
-No nucleus (This frees up more room for haemoglobin , maximises the amount of oxygen that they can carry.
-Haemogoblin (Binds with oxygen in the lungs , carries oxygen which will then be released to the body cells to be used for respiration.)
-Small size (Red blood cells are small so that they can pass through tiny capillaries.)
-Biconcave shape (creates a large surface area and allows for the rapid diffusion of oxygen.)
What would happen if red blood cells had a nucleus?
There would be les space for haemogoblin and oxygen
What are white blood cells features?
- Has a nucleus
-Can change shape (able to squeeze through the walls of blood vessels into body tissues and to engulf harmful microorganisms.)
