Blood Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is blood?
What is the function of blood?
What is plasma
Blood is a fluid type of connective tissue.
It’s function is to transport oxygen, carbon dioxide, wastes, nutrients and hormones to and from body cells. Help regulate PH and temperature. Immune function
Plasma is the fluid portion of the blood in which the components are suspended.
What does blood plasma consist of?
Water (91%) Proteins (7%) Mineral salts (0.9%) Nutrients Organic waste materials Hormones Enzymes Gases
What are the three major blood plasma proteins and their function?
All plasma proteins are made by liver cells (hepatocytes)
- Albumin
Carrier or substances like lipids and steroid hormones. Maintains osmotic pressure. It has charge so can draw water back in blood. - Globulins
Function is to provide immunity - immunoglobulins (anti-body)
Transports iron, lipids and vitamins - Fibrinogen
Aka clotting factor 1.
What are blood plasma nutrients and how are they passed through the body?
Blood plasma nutrients include:
Carbohydrates (sugars) mostly glucose
Amino acids - building blocks of amino acids
Fat/oils - HDL, LDL, VLDL
Vitamins
The main mineral components of blood plasma nutrients are?
Cations - (positively charges ion) sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium
Anions - (negatively charged ions) chlorides, bicarbonates, phosphates
Give examples of organic waste blood plasma transports from body.
Urea: produced from the breakdown of proteins
Creatinine: produced by the breakdown of proteins
Uric acid: as above
Carbon dioxide: produced from respiratory metabolism
