Blood Groups Flashcards
(5 cards)
Where are antigens located and what are they composed of?
Antigens are located on the surface of erythrocytes and are composed of glycoproteins and glycolipids
ABO blood group.
Which blood group is the universal donor and which blood group is the universal recipient?
Blood type O is the universal donor because erythrocytes have neither A or B antigens for antibodies to attach to.
Blood type AB is the universal recipient because it has both the A and B antigen and has no antibodies in plasma.
Rhesus Blood Group
What is meant by Rhesus negative and Rhesus positive?
Rhesus antigen is another surface antigen found on erythrocytes.
Rh+ have Rhesus antigens on the surface of erythrocyte
Rh- do not have Rhesus antigens on the surface of erythrocyte
True or False.Anti-Rhesus antibodies are produced in rh- individuals only if they come into contact with the Rhesus antigen
True
How would you combat Rh incompatibility?
Would only occur during pregnancy if mother was Rh- and baby Rh+.
An injection of anti-rh antibodies given to mum bind to and inactivate foetal rh antigens
