Blood vasculature lab Flashcards
(29 cards)
Internal carotid artery
Branch of common carotid, passes through carotid canal. Becomes the anterior and middle cerebral arteries. Supplies branches to walls of cavernous sinus, pituitary, trigeminal ganglion, primary to the brain
Anterior cerebral artery
Supplies cerebral hemispheres (except the occipital lobes), especially medial portions
Anterior communicating artery
Connects two anterior cerebral arteries
Middle cerebral artery
Supplies lateral portions of frontal, parietal, temporal lobes, some of lateral occipital lobe
Anterior choroidal artery
Supplies choroid plexus beginning in the temporal pole
Posterior communicating artery
Connects branches between the internal carotid and the posterior cerebral arteries, supplies posterior thalamus
Vertebral arteries
Origin: subclavian artery. Through foramen magnum
Posterior inferior cerebellar artery
Branch of vertebral artery, supplies lateral brain stem and the posterior-inferior cerebellum
Anterior spinal artery
From vertebral artery. Supplies ventral and intermediate gray matter of the spinal cord and ventral and lateral funiculi.
Basilar artery
2 vertebral arteries join at the medulla and pons and form the basilar artery. Terminal branches are the posterior cerebral arteries
Anterior inferior cerebellar artery
Caudal branch of basilar artery. Supplies anterior inferior cerebellum. Labryrthine artery branches off (supplies the middle ear)
Pontine artery
Short and long circumferential arteries that supply the pons
Superior cerebellar artery
Rostral branch of basilar artery that supplies the superior cerebellum and the rostral pons and midbrain
Posterior cerebral artery
Terminal branch of basilar artery, supplies midbrain and occipital and temporal lobes of the brain
Dura
Tough connective tissue composed of periosteal and meningeal layers
Meningeal arteries
Middle meningeal artery enters cranial cavity through foramen spinosum. Anterior and posterior enter through various foramina in skull base
Superior saggital sinus
Upper portion of falx cerebri
Cerebral vein
Venous drainage of the cerebrum into dural sinuses
Arachnoid
Arachnoid membrane and trabeculae, cerebrospinal fluid between arachnoid and the pia
Tentorium cerebelli
Separates the cerebellum (posterior fossa) from the cerebral hemispheres (supratentorial)
Diaphragma cella
Covers sella turcica that contains the pituitary
Arachnoid villi
Projections of the arachnod through the dura into the dural sinuses, resorption of CSF
Cisterna magna
Large CSF containing space between cerebellum and medulla, immediately above the foramen magnum
Lateral ventricle
In cerebral hemisphere and brain stem, contains CSF
