BMS 108 Ch. 01 Welcome to Physiology Flashcards
This flashcard deck was created using Flashcardlet's card creator
What steps must be taken before generating a hypothesis?
Make an observation; state the problem or question
What is a mechanism?
How things work
What is a hypothesis? a theory?
An educated guess; a general statement that explains natural phenomena that is based on a proven hypothesis.
What is homeostasis? What type of feedback helps maintain homeostasis? What two tissue types in your body are most often involved in homeostasis?
A maintenance of a state of dynamic constancy; negative; nervous & epithelial tissue
What does glucagon and insulin control?
Blood glucose level
Of the sensor, integrating center, and effector: which is most likely lockated in the brain?
Integrating center
When you stand up, what happens to your BP? What is your body’s response?
BP drops; body increases heart rate to compensate.
What are the four primary tissue types?
- Nervous
- Muscle
- Epithelial
- Connective
Where do you find interstitial fluid?
Outside of cells in a tissue.
Why is positive feedback rare?
Because it doesn’t contribute to homeostasis. It amplifies changes.
What are the two kinds of extracellular fluid?
Interstitial fluid and blood plasma
The body is made up of 70% water. What percentage of that is intracellular fluid? Extracellular fluid?
67%; 33%
