what are the 4 main body cavities?
- cranial cavity
- vertebral cavity
- ventral body cavity (thoratic and abdominopelvic cavities)
- pelvic cavity
where is the ventral cavity?
anterior trunk
what organs are in the ventral cavity?
lungs, heart, stomach, intestine, reproductive organs
what 2 cavities is the ventral cavity split into?
- thoracic: upper trunk (2 pleural cavities – holding the lungs, 1 pericardial cavity – for the heart)
- abdominopelvic cavity: lower trunk (abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity)
what organs are held in the abdominal cavity?
liver, stomach, gall bladder, large intestine, small intestine, kidneys
what organs are in the pelvic cavity?
male: urinary bladder, urethra, rectum, testes
female: urinary bladder, uterus, ovaries, rectum, urethra, vagina
where is the dorsal cavity located
posterior (back) of body including head and back of trunk
split into cranial (upper skull and brain) and spinal cavities (spinal cord)
- aldo contains meninges (3 layer membrane enclosing brain and spinal cord), layer of cerebrospinal fluid
