A

Head should not extend beyond the midline.
Arms lie evenly at both sides.
Distance between scapulas and spine equal on both sides.
Spinal column straight.
Buttocks don’t protrude.
Back has natural curve.

A

Lifestyle, Occupation, Driving, pregnancy, illness, ageing, respiratory conditions, carrying children or shopping, muscle imbalance, embarrassment.

What is a dowager’s hump? Fault, cause and treatment

A

Fatty deposits are laid down and build up on the back of the neck to form a hump. Caused by weakening of muscles around thoracic spine - other muscles are then put under stress. Client should keep head and neck in correct alignment. Recommend they push head and neck backwards, hold for 1 second and repeat. Petrissage and tapotement may help.

Winged scapula? Fault, cause and treatment.

A

Shoulder blades protrude, pectoral muscles will be stretched and adductor muscles of scapula will tighten. damage to the thoracic nerve the most common cause.
Advise of correct posture. Tapotement on pecs. effleurage and petrissage on upper back. exercises to tighten pecs.

Kyphosis - fault, cause and treatment.

A

Rounded shoulders. Pectoral muscles tighten and muscles of thoracic spine become stretched. Poor posture in childhood. heavy shopping. Advise on correct posture. Tapotement on upper back to strengthen over stretched muscles. effleurage and pettrisage on chest.
Recommend stretches for pecs. Exercises to strenghten scapula adductors.

Lordosis - fault, cause and treatment

A

Curvature of lumbar area. Muscles in lower back tighten and over stretching of abs. Caused by muscular imbalance of pelvic area. Tapotement on abs. effleurage and petrissage to lumbar area. Stretching for lower back. ab exercises.

Scoliosis - fault, cause and treatment

A

lateral curve of spine either s or c shaped. Muscles on one side of body shorten. Uneven shoulders, hips or waist. Can be congenital or due to injury. Effleurage and pettrissage to relax side that is lower. Tapotement to strengthen over stretched muscle. Stretches for lower side and strength exercise for over stretched side.
