Q

Define a CONVENTIONAL boiler

A

Used by all wet central heating systems. Has a hot water cylinder for bathing/ washing. Household will pay for heating of full cylinder, regardless of use.

Q

Define a COMBINATION boiler

A

aka ‘combi’. Can be fuelled by LPG, gas, oil. Provides heating/ hot water. Extra exchange allows for hot water from mains supply. Households only pay for actual use - heats water instantaneously.

Q

Define a CONDENSING boiler

A

has a large heat exchanger, captures heat from flue gases that leave property - reduces wasted energy and is more effiicent. Can be used in conventional/ combi boilers, oil and LPG

Q

Define a BIOMASS boiler

A

Burns lump wood logs. Uses wooden pellets to provide heating via wet central heating and domestic hot water. operate more continously than gas, oil, LPG boiler and need large accumalation tank for storage of hto watre - due to this, it is uncommon in domestic properties.

Q

Why would an electric heater not need a flue?

A

Gas fires, heaters and water ehaters create PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION which must be removed

Q

How does an open flue work?

A

Takes air from inside room and uses in combustion. Think boilers and fires - products of combustion must be removed. This usually has a natural draught.

Q

How does a balanced flue work?

A

The appliance is sealed off from the room. can be used with gas fires, water heaters and boilers situated on an external wall. Comprises of a metal duct with 2 pipies - one draws air in, and the other transports products of combution outside. The balance of air in and out means the pressure is the same

Q

How does a balanced flue with fan assistance work?

A

This improves the efficiency of boiler/ heater. Masinly seen on new build properties- as plume is seen when working, extended flue can assist with this
