Q

What does a GAS MULTIPOINT INSTANTANEOUS WATER HEATER do?

A

multipoint appliances have a central unit with several outlets (taps/ showerhead) - burner ignites and burns gas when tap/ shower is turned on

Q

What does an ELECTRIC singlepoint instantaneous water heater

A

Provides hot water to one area only - e.g shower. V high usage, cold water input, passes through small immersion heater

Q

What does an immersion heater do?

A

Copper domestic hot water cylinder - often as supplements to back boilers and cenrtral heating systems. An element projections into water - heated by electric current (think kettle). Hot water rises by convection as it is less dense and colder water remains at the bottom. Therefore, if the element is placed at the top of the tank, it will turn off heat sooner. However, an element placed at the botom is needed for high usage, or for off-peak tariff.

Q

How does the Central Heating system HW work?

A

Most common type - the boiler heats up water which passes through heat exchangers in cylinder. This is fully pumped around the house - enters cylinder from boiler, pumped through copper coil to heat up water for use in bathing/ washing. The water from the cylinder does not come into contact with water for the boiler.

Q

How does Solar Thermal Water heating work?

A

energy from the sun is used to heat fluid that passes through a solar collector (flat plate/ evacuated tiubes) - the hot liquid indirectly heats water via a heat exchanger. Normally positioned facing south/ between SE/ SW. Solar thermal systems provide a household with 40-50% of need for a whole year.
