bonding Flashcards
(11 cards)
Types of bonding?
Ionic, covalent, metallic
Define ionic bonding.
Electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
Define covalent bonding.
Shared pair of electrons between atoms.
Define metallic bonding.
Electrostatic attraction between a lattice of positive metal ions and delocalised electrons.
What is a dative covalent bond?
A covalent bond in which both electrons come from the same atom.
What determines molecular shape?
Electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory.
Example bond angles?
Linear = 180°, Trigonal planar = 120°, Tetrahedral = 109.5°, Trigonal bipyramidal = 120°/90°, Octahedral = 90°
Define electronegativity.
The ability of an atom to attract a shared pair of electrons in a covalent bond.
Define polar bond.
Covalent bond where electrons are unequally shared due to electronegativity difference.
Types of intermolecular forces?
Van der Waals (induced dipole), dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonding
Define hydrogen bonding.
A strong intermolecular attraction between H bonded to F, O, or N and a lone pair on F, O, or N.
