Bonding Flashcards
Define ionic bonding
Made up of charged particles (ions) the positive ions are formed by metals having lost one or more electrons. The negative ions are formed by non-metals going one or more extra electrons. From lattices and crystals when solid. High melting points, hard by brittle, uniform, not reactive when solid and dissolves in water to create a solution
Define covalent bonding
Made up from non-metal elects which are joined by bonds where electrons are shared to complete their outer shell (molecular compound), low melting points, small, can be very reactive, soft brittle, doesn’t dissolve in water
Define metallic bonding
Occurs between metal atoms only. Electrostatic attractions between a lattice of positive ions surrounded by delocalised electrons (sea of electrons)
