Periodic Table Flashcards
What’s are the groups in a periodic table?
The horizontal columns of elements. Elements within a group share several properties. The Roman numerals above each group are the usual number of valence electrons the element has (outer electrons)
What is a Periods on a periodic table
Vertical rows of elements, the period number of an element signified the highest unexpired energy level of an electron in that element
Describe a metal
Shiny, solid at room temperature (expect Mercury), good conductor of heat and electricity, malleable , ductile, High melting point
Describe a non metal
Dull, solid or gas at room temperature (except bromine) doesn’t conduct heat or electricity (insulator), not ductile, brittle, low melting point
What is a transition metal
Ductile good conductors, there valence electrons or the electrons they used to combine with other elements are present in more than one shell. High density and melting point used a catalyst
What is a noble gas
Colourless, odourless, tasteless, nonflammable gas. They all conduct electricity, have a complete outer shell, low boiling points and exist as single atoms (6 noble gases)
