Bone marrow Flashcards
(8 cards)
Which processes take place in the bone marrow contributing to peripheral blood?
Erythropoiesis Granulopiesis Megakaryopoiesis thrombopoiesis thrombopoiesis lymphopoiesis
Where does hematopoiesis take place in prenatal and postnatal?
*Postnatal: Yolk-sac>liver and spleen.
From 4 months : Bone marrow >liver > spleen
Postnatal :Tibia ,Femur BEFORE TURNING 30 YRS
After turning 30: Vertebrae >Sternum > Rib
T/F: After puberty, marrow contains a significant number of adipocytes, and these increase with age.Average adult marrow cellularity = 40-60%
False: After infancy
How do we diagnose diseases in the bone marrow?
> Bone marrow biopsy
What is the best site for marrow biopsy?
*Illiac crest and never sternum
What time of sample is obtained?
- Bone aspirate
* Bone marrow trephine
Uses of the aspirate?
*To provide cells for cytological examination
Procedure: Spread sample on a slide, stain, and exam microscopically to determine the morphology
- Provide anticoagulated specimen for flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and culture
- DNA PCR and FISH can be done on spread marrow / anticoagulated specimen
- RT-PCR requires anticoagulant specimens in a special medium
Uses of the trephine biopsy?
- Used to see the architecture of the bone marrow rather than individual cells :
- granulomas, infiltrating neoplasm eg lymphoma ,carcinoma, marrow necrosis fibrosis
