Bone tissue Flashcards
Where do sesamoid bones develop?
Tendon
What is the diaphysis of a long bone?
shaft
What is the epiphysis of a long bone?
ends
What is the metaphysis of a long bone?
middle
What is the epiphyseal plate?
Where cartilage was when growing
What is articular cartilage?
cartilage found on the ends of bones that articulate (joints that move)
What is the medullary cavity?
red/yellow bone marrow where blood cells are produced and fat is stored
What is the periosteum?
outside covering
What is the fibrous periosteum?
Where tendons/ligaments insert
Why is the articular cartilage important?
resistance to compression
what lines the medullary cavity?
endosteum
What are osteoprogenitor cells??
baby squamous cells lying there quietly (quiescent)
What are osteoblasts?
Teen cells doing work/ osteogenesis/ creating bone
what are osteocytes?
mature cells
what are osteoclasts?
bone resorption (osteolysis)
What do bone specific proteins love?
Calcium
What follows calcium around?
phosphate
What do chondroclasts do?
from blood; destroy cartilage in bone development
What is the epiphsial plate made out?
hyelin cartilage during bone development
