Q

What is the membrane the lines the outer part of the bone? lines the diaphysis

A

Periosteum
- covers all part of bone except for the parts where joints are
- double layered
- Fibrous layer: Outer layer (dense CT)
- Osteogenic layer: Inner layer (contains osteoblasts)

Q

Types of bone marrow and their facts

A

Red bone marrow
- contains hematopoietic tissue (red colored tissue)
- mainly in flat bones
- production of blood cells (red, white, platelets)

Yellow bone marrow
- Contains fatty tissue (yellow colored tissue)
- in diaphysis of long bones
- fat storage / energy reserve

16
Q

The different types of lamallae

A

Concentric - found in osteons, surrounds the central haversion canal
Interstitial - between osteons (incomplete layers)
Circumferential - outer and inner surfaces of bone. complete layers that go around the entire bone

17
Q

Difference between central/haversion canal and Volkman’s canal?

A

Central canal runs vertically and Volkmans canal runs horizontally

18
Q

What are canalculi

A

microscopic channels that connect lacunaes

19
Q

What are fontanels?

A

soft spots on a baby’s skull
- dense CT membrane filled spaces
- over time the fontanels close

20
Q

Different types of fontanels

A

Anterior Fontanel: top
Posterior Fontanel: top back
Sphenoidal (anterolateral) Fontanels: side front
Mastoid (posterolaterl) Fontanels: side back

21
Q

when do the anterior and posterior fontanels close?

A

Anterior: between 12 months
Posterior: between 2-3 months

22
Q

How many cranial bones are there? recall them

A

8 cranial bones
- Occipital
- parietal
- frontal
- temporal
- ethmoid
- sphenoid

23
Q

How many facial bones are there? recall them

A

14 facial bones (2 with just one pair)
- nasal
- palatine
- lacrimal
- inferior nasal concha
- zygomatic
- maxilla
- mandible (only 1)
- vomer (only 1)

24
Q

what are zygomatic bones?

25
What are parts of the occipital bone?
- Foramen magnum: large hole through which the brain connects to the spinal cord - Occipital condyles: articulates (connects) with the first vertebrae (atlas) of spinal cord
26
What are the parts of the temporal bone?
external acoustic meatus: where sound enters styloid process: attachment for tongue and neck muscles mastoid process: anchoring for meck muscles zygomatic process: meets zygomatic bone in the back
27
What are the parts of the sphenoid bone?
OROS Optical canal: optic nerve pass toe eyes Foramen rotundum: maxillary nerve passageway Foramen vale: mandibular nerve passageway Foramen spinosum: transmits middle meningeal artery
