Book 5 Flashcards
(13 cards)
Explain modules of the block diagram of IFF
Complete the diagram of mode pulse spacing
What does mode 5 level 1 provide
Basic ID
Height data
What are the emergency codes
Emergency = 7700
Radio failure = 7600
Hijack = 7500
Describe the purpose of a P2 pulse
Allows the system to decide if the interrogation is from the main lobe
If P2 is smaller than P1 and P3 then you are in the main beam.
If P2 is bigger then you are in the side lobes and transponder is suppressed.
Describe mode 5 wake up pulse
Mode 5 benefits
Resistant to spoofing
Improved anti-jamming
Reduced aircrew workload
Reduced likelihood of blue on blue incident
What does mode 5 level 2 provide
Reports containing data
Encrypted GPS position
This can be triggered by interrogation or sent directly
State 3 advantages of thermal imaging IR sensors
Passive and undetectable
Independent of natural or artificial light
Not easily deceived by camo
Explain what is meant by confused jamming and deception jamming
Confusion jamming presents random returns on enemy radar displays
Deception jamming presents a false target on enemy radar displays
Disadvantages of FLIR
Atmospheric attenuation
Poor quality image
True size may not be displayed
Sensor head very expensive
Thermal shadows
Why is conventional glass not used for IR optics
Conventional glass is opaque to IR waveslenthgs greater than 3Micrometres, so special materials must be used for lenses/windows
