Primary Radar characteristics
Only one radar required
Does not need co-operation of target
High TX power needed for moderate range
Echoes received from all reflecting objects within range wether they are required or not
Primary radar Definition
A portion of its own energy returns back from the target
Secondary Radar Characteristics
Two radars must work together
Long ranges are obtainable with low Tx power
There are no echoes so no clutter
Examples of secondary radar
Tacan
IFF/SSR
