Q

Q

how can bowel obstruction lead to sepsis?

A
  • bowel becomes distended because food inside is unable to go anywhere
  • distention squeezes surrounding blood vessels and reduces blood supply to that area of the bowel
  • lack of oxygen leads to necrosis, further loss of peristalsis and an increase in anaerobic bacteria
  • anaerobic bacteria is able to enter the circulation
