Bowlbys Theory Of Maternal Deprivation Flashcards
(11 cards)
How can monotropic relationships be disrupted during critical period
Prolonged separation from mother and leads to negative and irreversible social, emotional and intellectual consequences
What is the critical period but also the risk time
30 months - however risk is up to 5 years
Social consequences of maternal deprivation
Delinquency - disrupted social development (e.g. petty crime)
Emotional consequence of maternal deprivation
Affectionless psychopathy - disrupted emotional development (no or little guilt)
Intellectual consequences of maternal deprivation
Low IQ - disrupted intellectual development
What is the continuity hypothesis
Deprivation from prolonged separation from mother limits ability for infant to form effective internal working model - unsuccessful child/adulthood relationships
What was Bowlbys Forty Four Thieves Study (1944)
- 44 child thieves and 44 emotionally disturbed non thieves (control group)
- interviewed to assess affectionless psychopathy and parents asked about maternal deprivation during critical period
- 14:0 matched criteria for affectionless psychopathy and 12:2 experienced separation from mother in critical period
AO3 Strength point
Research has significant impact on best practice in institutions such as hospitals where infants have prolonged separation from caregivers
AO3 Strength evidence
Historically visiting children in hospitals was very restricted which research has found children found very distressing
AO3 Limitation point
Not clear distinction between deprivation and privation
AO3 Limitation evidence
Rutter (1982) believed Bowlby was confusing the two concepts and using the terms interchangably. Privation - not having opportunity to form attachment with more damaging consequences
