Decline in traditional men’s jobs: 1980s -

Big decline in heavy manufacturing, mining and steel work.
Industry = outsourced to China, so that the UK gains cheap labour at the expense of exploitation.

A
The decline in manual labouring jobs has led to this crisis.
As w/o the prospect of gaining a job, w/c boys will lose the motivation to gain qualifications.

Boys and literacy -
A
Parents spend less time reading w/ sons.
Most is done by the mother because it appears as a ‘feminine’ role.
Boys leisure pursuits do not help to develop language skills.
Eg. Football and video games.
