Restricted code - Linguistic code of the w/c made up of short form of speech that are less clearly defined. Eg. Slang + abbreviation.
Elaborated code - Linguistic code of the m/c. Similar to speech used by teachers and textbooks.
Cultural capital - Bordieu
Argued that m/c families possess more cultural capital (knowledge, values, attitudes) that align w/ school system, giving children and advantage.
Cultural capital - Sullivan
Conducted research showing that students w/ greater cultural capital tend to achieve higher academic success.
Parental involvement - Feinstein
Emphasised the importance of parental interest and involvement in their children’s education, which is higher in m/c families.
Eg. reading a book to a child before bedtime.
