Brain Anatomy Flashcards
Mastery (test) (15 cards)
Grey Matter
Neuron cell bodies are organized into these sections, where neural processing occurs
White Matter
bundles of myelinated axons connecting regions within the brain or spinal cord
Cortex
Outer region of the brain (mostly gray)
gyri
ridges
sulci
grooves
Cerebrum
higher-order processing. In humans its responsible for sensory perception, learning, language, memory, and conscious behavior
corpus callosum
axons connecting the right and left cerebral hemispheres
Thalamus
filters and relays sensory information to the cerebrum
Cerebellum
Fine-tune motor control by comparing outgoing motor commands with sensory information about the actual ongoing movements achieved
Hypothalamus
Regulation of homeostatic set points including temperature regulation, thirst, hunger, etc
Brainstem
Contain centers vital to control of respiration, cardiovascular regulation, and digestive tract (e.g. swallowing vommitting)
Midbrain
coordinates reflex responses to sight (brainstem)
Pons
Regulates non conscious functions like breathing and sleep cycle (brainstem)
Medulla Oblongata
Where brain and spinal cord connect, helps regulate things like heartbeat and breathing (brainstem)
Olfactory bulb (two)
Receives signals from olfactory receptors. Tracts carry information from here to regions of the brain that process smell
