Ear Anatomy Flashcards
(12 cards)
Auricle
made of cartilage and skin, funnels sound into the ear canal
Hair Cells
Convert sound waves into electrical waves to be transmitted to central nervous system
Stereocilia
tiny hair-like projections, required for hearing and balance. convert physical force from sound and head movement
Auditory canal
Tube that carries sound from outer ear to eardrum (outer ear)
Tympanic membrane
also known as eardrum, vibrates and then transferred to tiny bones in middle ear
malleus
hammer-shaped bone or ossicle connected with incus (auditory ossicle)
incus
aka anvil, small bone that transmits vibrations from malleus to stapes (auditory ossicle)
Stapes
transmits sound vibrations from incus to oval window (auditory ossicle)
Oval window
Helps transmit from middle to inner ear
Cochlea
fluid filled, spiral shaped, snail shaped organ in the inner ear
semicircular canals
part of the vestibular system for balance
Organ of Corti
inside the cochlea
