Brain Definitions Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the corpus callosum?
The thick bridge of white tissue between the two hemispheres of the cerebral cortex
What is contained in each hemisphere of the cerebral cortex?
The cerebral cortex has two hemispheres. Each one has four loves with discrete regions that carry out specific functions.
What are the four regions within each hemisphere?
The frontal lobe, occipital lobe, parietal lobe, and the temporal lobe.
What is the prefrontal cortex responsible for?
Executive function, or the ability to make decisions. Helps us to focus our attention on the task at hand.
What does the parietal lobe do?
It helps us focus on the environment through the use of our senses. It helps us know where our body is within the environment. It also helps with mathematical reasoning, language, comprehension, working memory.
What does the occipital lobe do?
It decodes visual signals. It tells us where a frisbee is, if we should react to it flying at our face.
What is the temporal lobe responsible for?
It houses, memories, emotions, and language comprehension. It has the hippocampus and we’re in a keys area. It helps with recognizing objects places in people. The amygdala in here as well.
What is Wernicke’s area?
It helps with comprehending written and spoken language
What is the brainstem?
All the nerve fibres connecting, the brain, cerebellum and spinal cord, passed through the brainstem. It directs activities like heart rate and breathing. It’s involved with sleep, wake cycle, attention, temperature regulation, vision hearing, and motor control of muscles in the face and neck.
What three structures is the brain stem divided into
The midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata. Each of these structures contain clusters of neurons that govern specific core functions for body and life, maintenance, and.
