brain structure Flashcards
point 1
damage to PFC ( criminal )
phineas gage
case study
point 2
amygdala ( criminal )
Charles Whitman
- doesn’t consider ID, abusive father, SLT better explanation
point 3
hypothalamus:
⚡ Regulating the ANS (controlling heart rate, breathing, adrenaline)
🔥 Balancing hormones like testosterone and cortisol
🧠 Managing neurotransmitters involved in mood and behavior
🎯 Maintaining receptor function to properly respond to stimuli
When the hypothalamus is damaged or dysregulated, it can cause people to become easily provoked, with excessive aggression and poor emotional control, even in situations where aggression isn’t appropriate.
strength: hess fund when cats hypothalamus and basal ganglia was stimulated experienced aggressive seizures, overstimulation/ damage to hypothalamus- leads to a lack of control and violent, impuslive behaviour
weakness: lacks gen- animals brain less complex
application
- amygdala lectomies or scanning then monitored and choosing more appropriate jobs such as contact sports or the army
