Branching Filamentous Organisms Flashcards
(2 cards)
1
Q
Actinomycosis
A
- Actinomyces israelii, G+ rods
- characterized by abscesses and sinus tracts
- normally reside in oropharynx, GI, vagina
- must be inoculated to deeper tissues and have anaerobic env to cause disease
- cervicofacial - jaw injury, dental extraction
- thoracic - aspiration of organisms
- abdominal - disruption of bowel, esp appendix
- pelvic - prolonged use of IUDs
- abscess grows slowly and becomes series of abscesses connected by sinus tracts
2
Q
Nocardiosis
A
- Nocardia asteroides
- aerobic, G+, weakly acid fast
- most common in pts with impaired cell mediated immunity
- usually enters via respiratory tract
