Indian Independence Movement
People who lived in India trying to break free from British rule
Why did the British control India during this time?
The British Colonized India
What was Indians opinion of British rule?
They felt taken advantage of
Indian National Congress did what?
A group of Indian men who were promoting nationalism and trying to get India more rights from the British. The first example of Indians not being happy with how the British were ruling over them
Gandhi
a figure who fought for Indian rights. He was a member of the Indian National Congress.
Results of Gandhi’s protests?
Gained Indian support, stood up to Britain, and this resulted in positive changes in Indian society.
Armritsar Massacre
British troops shot into a crowd which killed/injured 100’s of Indians. This created a lot of tension between the two countries.
Rowlett Acts
British laws placed on the Indians that held them down and were strict/ unfair.
Gandhi becomes leader of Indian National Congress
His goal is to unify India against British rule through peaceful protest.
Homespun Movement
Indians decided to boycott (not use) British goods and make their own things at home. The goal was to not give the British their money.
Salt March
March lead by Gandhi. The purpose was to protest the British salt tax and the British monopoly over salt production in India.
Government Act of 1835
An effort by the Indians to get more Indian influence in the Government. More participation and elected officials.
Quit India Movement
During WWII India demanded that they wanted to be separate (free) from Britain. Indian military grew during this time to try and support this position.
Partition of India
India is split with part being ruled by Pakistan and half being fully under Indian rule.
How did Gandhi feel about the results of the Indian Independence Movement?
Pakistan and India being two different parts meant Gandhi’s people were divided. He was not happy that this was the case.
How did British rule in India end?
The Indians pushed and pressured the British for their freedom.
Describe Gandhi’s policy towards fighting for freedom?
Non-violent, & through civil disobedience (not following rules)

What critical event happens in 1947 in India?
India gains independence from Britain.
What was the non-aligned movement during the Cold War?
A movement where certain nations decided to not pick a side during the Cold War. They did this to avoid conflict.
Who was Jawaharlal Nehru
The first Prime Minister of India. Aimed to keep peace through neutralism and non-alignment
When the British finally left India in what state they leave the country?
There were many conflicts and problems still going on
What was the purpose of India’s Green Revolution?
To increase the production of crops (food)
