What are the four noble truths of Buddhism?
1) suffering - wanting what you having, not what you don’t have - no living can escape this (Dukkha)
2) Origin - if you can stop dukkha you can stop suffering - suffering can arise from excessive desire
3) Cessation - suffering will cease when desire ceases
4) Eightfold path - 8 principles of self improvement that will put an end to all suffering - understanding, thought, speech, conduct, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, meditation
What are the three gems to Buddhism?
1) Buddha - human being who fulfilled the spirtual potentional of all living creatures
2) Dharam - teachings
3) Sangha - congregation and community
What are the 3 main traditions “vehicles”
1) Theravada - oldest, 4 noble truths and 8 fold
2) Mahayana - main form in china, korea, japan “great vehicle”
3) Vajrayana - “dimond vehicle / thunderbolt” the third turning of the wheel of dharma
What are the 4 sights to Buddhism?
1) a sick man
2) a suffering old man
3) a dead man
4) a monk/ascetic
What are the 3 characteristics of existance?
1) suffering - pain and deprevation, physical and psychological, that humans are subject to
2) Impermenance - passing nature of things
3) No self - psycholgical implication of that existentail impermence
What is the Tripitaka?
- Vinaya Pitika: rules for monks and nuns
- Tripitaka: manscripts stored in baskets
- Sutra Pitika: speech of the buddha, and diolouges of him chatting with people
What is Siddhartha?
“he who achieves success”
What is Arhats?
‘Worthy ones”
What is Boddhisattvas?
those who have dedicated themselves to achieving buddhahood
What is Parinirvana?
when the buddha dies
What is Dharma?
External truth (ways of enlightment, laws of nature, rules of moral duty, reality of karma)
What is Monastics?
lay followers
What are monks and nuns?
lay men are monks, lay women are nuns
What is the Sangha?
Community of monks and nuns
What is bhikshu and bhikshuni?
Bhikshu: Ordained women
Bhikshuni: ordained men
