Anatta
No-self - Notion that there is no singular permanent self, just a recombination of componentts
Anicca
Impermanence, idea that the world is in constant flux
Arhat
Saint, someone who has achieved nirvana
Bodhisattva
Compassionate being who enlightens themselves and helps others do the same instead of going straight to nirvana
Buddha’s origin story
Kshatriya prince who was not divine. He was pampered as a child until he saw the 4 Sights which made him discontent and convinced him to be an ascetic, but he realized asceticism was a scam and discovered thhe Middle Way, meditated and saw 3 watches, and then became the buddha and started training his students.
Dharma
The teachings of Buddha and his ideas of the truth concerning the laws of the universe.
Dukkha
Idea that human suffering is inevitable
Five Precepts
Rules that buddhists follow:
- No harming living beings
- no improper sexual activity
- NO FALSE SPEECH
- no alcohol/drugs
- no stealing
Four Noble Truths
Buddha’s diagnosis of suffering - that it exists, has a cause, that it can be ended, and how to end it.
Middle Way
Path in life prescribed by the buddha between the extremes of luxury and asceticism
Nirvana
Buddhist end goal, state of bliss resulting from ending desire and suffering
Noble Eightfold Path
As the last of the four noble truths, the path to ending suffering
Samsara
Endless cycle of uncontrolled rebirth
Sangha
Community of buddhist nuns and monks
Tripitaka
Known as 3 baskets, collection of early scriptures.
Four Sights
The sights that Siddharta Guatama saw when leaving his palace that led him to asceticism - a sick man, a dead body, an old man, and a religious medicant
Sutras
Like parables except Buddhist, found in the Basket of Discourse

Complete visual representation of Samsara
What did Guatama eat as an ascetic?
one piece of fruit, one sesame seed, and one grain of rice.
Buddha’s 3 watches
1st watch - saw all his previous lifetimes
2nd watch - attained divine eye and saw rebirths of all other creautures
3rd watch - discovered the 4 noble truths
Samudaya
There is a cause for suffering (desire and craving)
Nirodha
There is an end to suffering (Nirvana, ending desire)
Magga
Suffering can be ended by following the noble 8fold path
Human symptoms and diagnosis
Symptom is suffering, the diagnosis is craving
