the man born into royalty destined to be a religious leader and shielded from the world in his kingdom for 29 years
Asceticism
a religion Siddhartha Gautama practiced before being Buddha, it is to rid yourself of all desires
Great Going Forth
when Siddhartha Gautama left his sheltered life in the kingdom at age 29 and wandered for 6 years
Buddha
to be enlightened
Four Noble Truths
- To live is to suffer
- To suffer is caused by desire
- Suffering can be brought to an end
- The solution is the Noble Eight-fold Path
Nirvana/Nibbana
the goal of Buddhism, the extinction of desire resulting in liberation of samsara
Eight-fold Path
- Right Belief: learn Buddha’s teachings.
- Right Thought: abandon evil attitudes; nurture good attitudes.
- Right Speech: Avoid gossip, lying, and abusive talk.
- Right Conduct: obey the Five Precepts.
- Right Livelihood: Abstain from occupations that harm.
- Right Effort: Maintain mental alertness to control the senses.
- Right Mindfulness: pay careful attention and be conscious.
- Right Meditation: do so to reach a point of perfect tranquility (nirvana).
Samsara
the process of reincarnation
Karma
a person’s actions carried on through all their lives-moral law of cause and effect
Dharma
religious and moral duties based on your placement in the caste system, gender, occupation, or age
Jataka Tales
stories told to young Buddhist children to teach them about morals
The Rebel Saint
Buddha was thought of as the rebel saint because he rebelled against the restrictions of Hinduism and he is a saint because he was able create a new religion that caters to one’s needs
