What is an appeal?
A request made after a trial by a party that has lost on one or more issues that a higher court review the decision to determine if it was correct.
What is a breach of contract?
When an individual or organisation breaks terms previously agreed in a contract.
Who is a claimant/plaintiff?
A person who goes to court to make a legal complaint against someone else.
What is a class action?
A lawsuit in which one or more members of a large group, or class, of individuals or other entities sue on behalf of the entire class.
What does compliance mean?
Conforming to a requirements.
What is a crime?
An action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law.
Examples are assault, robbery and cybercrime.
What are damages?
Compensation typically of money, paid to a person or organisation for loss or injury.
Who is a defendant?
An individual, company, or institution sued or accused in a court of law.
What is a duty of care?
A moral or legal obligation to ensure the safety or well-being of others.
What is a fine?
A penalty that requires someone to pay a sum of money fixed by law after an offense has been committed.
What is fraud?
Intentional misrepresentation or concealment of an important fact upon which the victim is meant to rely, and in fact does rely, to the harm of the victim.
What are grounds (legal)?
A reason or a justification for legal action.
What does guilty mean?
Responsible for a specified offence.
What is a hearing?
A legal proceeding where the facts of a particular issue are looked at, and evidence is presented to help decide what the outcome should be.
Who is a witness?
Someone who sees an event, typically a crime or accident, take place.
What is burglary?
Illegal building intrusion.
Who is a lawyer?
Someone whose job is to give advice to people about the law and speak for them in court.
What does innocent mean?
Not guilty of a crime.
What is a jury?
A group of people sworn to make a decision in a legal case.
