What is motivation?
The process that accounts for an individual’s intensity, direction, and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal.
What is extrinsic motivation?
Motivation that arises from external factors (money, incentives, praise, etc.).
What is intrinsic motivation?
Motivation that arises from internal factors, such as the desire to learn new skills or personal enjoyment.
What are the needs associated with intrinsic motivation?
Needs for achievement, affiliation, and power.
What is the need for achievement?
The drive to excel and achieve one’s fulfillment in relation to a set of standards.
What is the need for affiliation?
The need for interpersonal relationships.
What is the need for power?
The need to influence others and make them behave in ways they otherwise wouldn’t.
What is organizational justice?
Fairness of decisions and resource allocations in an organization.
What is the effort-performance relationship?
The perceived probability that effort will lead to performance.
What is the performance-reward relationship (instrumentality)?
The extent to which individuals believe that performing their work at a given level will lead them to a desired outcome.
What is the rewards-personal goals relationship (valence)?
The extent to which organizational rewards meet the goals and needs of individuals, along with the attractiveness of these rewards.
What is expectancy theory?
It is based on the premise that a person will be motivated to put forth a higher level of effort if they believe their efforts will result in a desired outcome.
What are social needs?
The need to belong to a group (work, friends, etc.).
What are esteem needs?
The need for factors boosting self-esteem.
What is job rotation?
A practice that allows employees to move from one job to another.
What is job enrichment?
A strategy used to motivate employees by giving them increased responsibility and variety in their jobs.
