C 2.2 Products from limestone Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is cement made from?
Cement is made by heating limestone with clay in a kiln.
What is mortar made from?
Mortar is a mixture of cement, sand, and water.
What is concrete made from?
Concrete is made from cement, sand, water, and aggregate (e.g. gravel or crushed rock).
What are the advantages of using concrete in construction?
It is strong, durable, and can be moulded into shapes.
What are the disadvantages of using concrete?
It can be brittle and crack under tension. Production releases CO₂.
What are the advantages of using limestone as a building material?
Widely available, relatively cheap, strong when used properly, and long-lasting.
What are the disadvantages of quarrying limestone?
Destroys habitats, creates noise and dust, heavy traffic near quarries, and ruins the landscape.
What are the environmental impacts of producing cement?
Releases CO₂ during thermal decomposition of limestone. Burning fossil fuels in the kiln also adds to CO₂ emissions.
What is the role of limestone in the production of cement?
It provides calcium oxide (quicklime) when heated, which is a key component of cement.
