C 6 Hydrocarbon fuels Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a fuel?
A substance that releases energy when it burns, usually in the form of heat.
What type of reaction is fuel combustion?
An exothermic reaction – it releases energy to the surroundings.
What are the main products of complete combustion of hydrocarbons?
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water (H₂O).
What are the possible products of incomplete combustion?
Carbon monoxide (CO), carbon (soot), and water (H₂O).
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous?
It is toxic, and it binds to haemoglobin, preventing oxygen from being carried in the blood.
What environmental issue does carbon dioxide cause?
It contributes to the greenhouse effect and global warming.
What environmental issue is caused by sulfur impurities in fuel?
Acid rain, due to sulfur dioxide (SO₂) released when the fuel burns.
How does acid rain affect the environment?
It damages buildings, kills plants, and harms aquatic life in lakes and rivers.
What is released when nitrogen reacts with oxygen in high-temperature engines?
Nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) – which also contribute to acid rain and respiratory problems.
Why is soot (carbon particles) a problem?
It causes respiratory problems and contributes to global dimming by reflecting sunlight.
