C1 Flashcards
(12 cards)
Name three limitations of the particle model
Limitations of the particle model include that the forces of attraction aren’t shown, the particles are all solid spheres when in reality particles aren’t sold and are all different shapes and it doesn’t show the size of particles or the space between them.
How do gas particles travel
Randomly in straight lines until they collide
What is the term for a solid becoming a gas
Sublimation
List the theory’s about the atom when they were made and who made them
1) John Dalton in 1803 said that all matter was made up of atoms which were solid spheres
2) JJ Thompson in 1897 said that there were smaller negatively charged particles called electrons scattered around the atom like plums in a plum pudding
3) Ernest Rutherford in 1909 said that the atom has a positively charged nucleus surrounded by a cloud of electrons from his gold foil experiment
4) Niels Bohr in 1912 said that electrons existed in energy levels surrounding the nucleus
How much does an atom weigh?
An atom weighs about 1x10-23 g
What is the radius of an atoms nucleus?
An atoms nucleus have a radius of 1x10-15 m
What is the relative atomic mass of an electron?
The relative atomic mass of an electron is 0.0005
What is an ion
An atom which due to more/less electrons than protons has a positive/ negative charge
What is an isotope?
An isotope is an atom of the same element with a different mass number due to a different number of neutrons
How much does an atom weigh?
An atom weighs about 1x10-23 g
What is the radius of an atoms nucleus?
An atoms nucleus have a radius of 1x10-15 m
What is the relative atomic mass of an electron?
The relative atomic mass of an electron is 0.0005
