C1: Atomic Structure Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the period table arranged in?
groups and periods
What does each block contain?
mass number and proton number of each element
What is the proton number?
how many protons are in the nucleus of the element
All electrons are?
negative
All protons are?
positive
What are neutrons?
carry no charge
What is an element?
a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
What is it composed of?
atoms with the same atomic number
What is a compound?
a substance comprised of two or more elements
What do compounds have?
fixed composition, need chemical reactions to separate, chemical bonds between atoms
What do mixtures have?
no fixed composition, easier to separate, no chemical bonds between atoms
What is Fitration?
Poor mixture through filter paper
What is filteration?
separates insolvable substances from a mixture
What is crystallisation?
separates a solute from a solution
What is distillation?
separates a solvent from a solution, removing the solute
How do you work out the number of neutrons?
Mass number minus the number of protons
What is an ion?
Has a charge, has a different number of electrons
What is an isotope?
either heavier or lighter, has a different mass
What is an atom?
Smallest possible thing that can exist on its own
What is a subatomic particle?
anything smaller then an atom
