C10 - Organic reactions Flashcards
(30 cards)
What are alkenes?
- Hydrocarbons with a double carbon-carbon bond
What is the general formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
Why are alkene molecules unsaturated?
Contain two fewer hydrogen atoms than the alkane with the same number of carbon atoms
What are the first four members of the homologous series of alkenes known as?
- Ethene
- Propene
- Butene
- Pentene
What is the functional group of the alkenes?
C=C
What happens when alkenes react with oxygen?
Burn with a smoky flame due to incomplete combustion
What happens when alkenes react with hydrogen, water and the halogens?
The atoms are added across the carbon carbon double bond so that the double bond becomes a single carbon-carbon bond
Alkene + hydrogen —>
Alkane
- Hydrogenation, needs catalyst
Alkene + water —>
Alcohol
- Hydration, 300 degrees, needs catalyst
Alkene + halogen —>
Halogenoalkane
- Spontaneous
What is the functional group of alcohols?
-OH
What are the first four members of the alcohol series?
- Methanol
- Ethanol
- Propanol
- Butanol
What happens when alcohol burns in air?
Complete combustion to make carbon dioxide and water
What happens when alcohols react with sodium?
They react to produce a sodium alkoxide and hydrogen
What happens when sodium is added to water?
The shortest hydrocarbon chains can mix to form a solution
What happens when alcohols react with oxidising agents?
Carboxylic acids and water are formed
What are the uses of the first 3 alcohols?(2)
- Fuels - highly flammable and can ignite easily
- Solvents - marker pens, medicines, and deodorants, perfurmes
How is ethanol produced from sugar?
Sugar solutions are fermented with yeast
What are the 3 conditions for fermentation of sugar?
- Sugar dissolved in water with yeast
- air lock to allow carbon dioxide out(anaerobic conditions)
- warm temperature
What is the functional group of carboxylic acids?
-COOH
What is the general formula for carboxylic acids?
CH3COOH
What are the first four members of the carboxylic acids?
- Methanoic
- Ethanoic
- Propanoic
- Butanoic
What happens when the carboxylic acids react with carbonates?
They form a salt, water and carbon dioxide gas
What happens when the carboxylic acids dissolve in water?
They dissolve to form acidic solutions
